Arguably, cnet pioneered social shopping by combining editorial reviews with the ability for users to add comments and rate products in popular categories.  Their site is a giant, but more recently pure web 2.0 shopping utilities have emerged and are building large communities around similar product likes and dislikes.  Sociomash.com believes that the revenue model and their tight relationship with poduct sales will allow these sites to continue growth and secure further financing.  This is a space to watch. 

Some of the sites below are extremely useful in helping to wade through the millions of products that marketers thrust before us.

thisnext.com is one of the premiere Social Shopping sites and is growing a large community of reviewers who can shopcast their recommendations.  The site has Sr. Management Expertise from cnet.com and pricegrabber but has a much different business model.  Thisnext is providing a facebook widget which we will review shortly.  SocioMash.com is also exploring the affiliate opportunities involved with building a strong network on thisnext.com

Cnet.com is huge media company centered around user opinions and editorial review of products. Over the past 10 years, cnet has controlled many different brands (download.com, cnet TV, ZDNet, mySimon, webshots and the New Edge) focusing largely on Technology related new and reviews and comparisons.  Product Comparisons and a strong price comparison engine have proven popular.  Surely CBS Corps. 2008 bid at $1.8 billion dollars will have an impact on the valuations of others in Social Shopping.

Kaboodle.com has been around since 2005 and has grown to over 500,000 registered users who have reviewed over 3 million products. The site seems to be geared more towards women (though we can't find supporting statistics, testamonials on the site would suggest as such) and we like the design and networking technology behind thisnext.com more. That being said, kaboodle.com appears to be slightly ahead when it comes to traffic rankings on Alexa.

Zebo.com is a smaler social shopping platform with low traffic from North America. Traffic rankings in India and Iran are much higher so you are likely to find more information about products and social networks developping from respective locals.

Epinions.com is a strong example of a review community that produces quality editorial like reviews in two flavours (20-199 words vs. 200+ words).  Their site has been compared favorably with Consumer Reports by attacting excellent and passionate communities while rewarding the better content.  Th community also self moderates by creating a "web of trust" rating system.  Epinions.com was started in 1999 and is currently owned by ebay.com.
