So what is it that makes Youtube and Google Video so popular?  At Sociomash, we believe that even though a picture is worth a thousand words, a video tells the whole story.  It is the ability to share this information quickly and visually that have spawned so many video sharing sites.  Of course decreased storage and bandwidth costs combined with faster internet connections and well compressed / secure video presentations using flash or light cell phone videos make resource intensive sites like Youtube possible.  Video sharing fits the Web 2.0 mold with user developed content creating a viral marketing type of traffic boost.  Entertaining content coupled with new abilities to embed relevant advertising in media players will help fund the segment's growth.

    youtube link
YouTube.com is the largest Video Sharing portal in the world based on traffic statistics from Alexa and Google has said that it is their biggest draw on network resources (bandwidth and storage).  Google purchased Youtube.com in 2006 when the company was only 1.5 years old and have continued its growth without much consideration toward profitablility.  In 2008, they will embed new advertising media into videos and try to create an engine that monetizes the incredible amount of traffic.  YouTube has scaled well and the software is easy to use; successful videos can garner millions of views ...

    Google Video link
Video.Google.com is both a large Video sharing portal and a search engine for all portals. In combination with their YouTube efforts, Google is now serving up embedded video advertising that will help drive revenue to Video sharing sites and will ensure that Google keeps relatonships with all of them. SocioMash.com sees a similar search / ad supply model being delivered with OpenSocial.

    Blip.TV link
Blip.TV is a user generated content Video Sharing portal that focuses on shows and series.  They offer an opt-in advertising revenue share for content providers and offer some of the most open distribution policies availble to help your content syndicate.  Higher end content providers can get into sponsorship partnerships if they are bringing in significant traffic.  Blip.TV provides users and content providers with ultimate control over formats and presentation and provides a flash media player that can be embedded or distributed over any website.

    revver.com link
Revver.com was created in 2004, but the site and publishing tools didn't go live until late 2005.  Revver.com was the first site to introduce a revenue share for advertising and has a tagging system that can follow content around the web.  The site also released its development API in 2006 allowing developers to create sites with all of the functionality of revver.com and have access to the complete media library.  Brilliantly, Revver also provides an affiliate opportunity for publishers promoting their favorite video content.  You might recognize Revver from their syndication of Mentos in Coke bottles which has been viewed over 11 million times.

    Brightcove.TV link
BrightCove.TV is the both a user developed content sharing platform and an internet TV business.  They have inked deals with many large news and media companies over the past year and look like they are very revenue focused.  The founders of the company started Coldfusion development software (in the 1990's) and held Sr. positions at Macromedia developing the flash tools that most other Video sharing sites are using.  Accordingly, all video delivery is encoded in Flash media players.  Brightcove 3 is poised to redefine video quality online while providing new opportunities for advertising revenue..
