Image Sharing PDF Print E-mail

The proliferation of Digital Cameras and the increaing quality of images captured on cell phones means that almost everyone needs a way to store and share photos.  While many social networking tools have strong gallery and image sharing engines, a number of site's business models revolve entirely around images and they do it extremely well.   We believe that the mobile camera phone market will spur continued growth in this market as users looks for ways to instantly upload, store and share new images.

    myspace link
Flickr.com was initially developed in Vancouver, BC (the home of SocioMash.com), but was acquired by Yahoo.com for around $35 million in 2005 (less than a year after its inception).  The owners both served as directors at yahoo after the purchase, but have since resigned to spend time with family and re-explore their entrepreneurial roots.  This leaves Yahoo at the helm for Flickr.com which offers a rich ajax file managemnt module and open api (and strong relationships with bloggers and Mac / Linux users).  They also offer a premium account with allows more upload space.  With both private and public albums, you can ensure that your photos are shared appropriately.  Flickr.com has aso recently allowed for premium members to upload video content and has built a strong geotagging mashup that allows users to post and search for images based on location.
    Photobucket.com link
Photobucket.com is the largest photosharing website currently online receiving most of its traffic from MySpace, Bebo, Facebook and ebay photo storage.  The site allows for the creation of slideshows, photo albums and video albums offered through a basic free account or a paid pro account with a higher storage allowance.  Photobucket has a strong upload tool and offers batch uploads through FTP with their paid account.  Hosting billions of images and receiving more hits than Facebook (Hitwise 2007) it makes sense that Fox made a successful a bid for Photobucket last year.

    fotki.com link
Fotki.com started in 2008 as a collaberation tool for a group of friends wanting to communicate and share images.  It has since grown to offer blogging and social networking tools and hosts over one billion images.   Their image and video managment tools power fortune 500 company libraries and they are looking at further expansion.  Fotki is profitable and is adding a new store that lets you reproduce your images on a variety of products as well as get standard prints for 9 cents each without even signing up.
